Book Review

It has been said that most of the ancient Persian history has been written or greatly influenced by its sworn enemies who were determined to undermine the magnificence of the ethical values that always guided the behavior of this unique superpower that lasted almost for twelve centuries. The self-serving desire of Greeks, Romans and Arabs to misrepresent or totally omit the guiding principles of the three major dynasties, which included the Achaemenians, the Parthians and Sassanians, is quite understandable. However, the injustice that has been perpetrated against the history of the Sassanians is unrivaled.
The Arabs did not only want to defeat an empire, occupy its land, but in order to succeed in a total and permanent plunder of a nation, they needed to occupy the minds of the inhabitants of the land. To their credit, they soon learned that the task of occupying the minds of the Persian people could not be accomplished by their inferior culture and way of life, alone. So, they embarked upon a program of encouraging misinformation and propagation total lies about the Sassanian rulers and the Persian way of life. They selectively and systematically disregarded all the positive attributes of the Persian rulers and the progress that they had created.
It is truly uplifting to see that some young Iranian writers and researchers are showing a genuine interest to take a deep and unbiased second look at the Persian history and heritage. Evidently, they have taken upon themselves to sift through enormous volumes of ancient Persian history in order to separate the valuable references from the biased, deceptive and distorted historical writings of the promoters of Iran's historical detractors.
Shahin Nezhad, the author of this book has produced a very comprehensive and well-balanced account of the Sassanian era. Without any hesitation, I can state that this author has reserved a special place for himself amongst all the other historians of the events of the last few centuries prior to the Arab invasion and occupation of Iran. We all owe it to ourselves to read this book carefully and learn from the most costly national disaster in our history.
