The right to preserve a nation's historical and cultural heritage
is a part of universal human rights
An open letter
To the Human Rights Organizations., UNESCO, and all peoples of the world
On the occasion of the International Day of Human Rights, and along with respecting this fundamental turning point in the history of human civilization, we would like to ask for your attention to the following points:
It is almost two years that a huge number of women and men, from all over the world, have been asking for the preservation of a vast part of human archeological treasures that are situated at Pasargad Plains of Iran and are being exposed to the immanent dangers caused by the construction of a dam just in their midst .
According to Human Rights Charter, such a demand is the socio-cultural right of all humans; and the relevant international organizations are responsible for guarding and preserving such material and spiritual heritages of mankind. Upon such facts, we urgently plea for your immediate action to salvage the Pasargad Plains, the capital of Cyrus the Great, the first historical personality who declared the universal rights of humans. The urgency is stemmed in the recent decision of the authorities in Islamic Republic of Iran to flood the Sivan Dam in the next few months. This dam is an actual threat to the Bolaghi Gorge, Pasargad Plains and the mausoleum of Cyrus. We ask for your help to stop this horrendous act.
If two years ago, no one knew the extent of the damage this dam could cause, today, and according to the verbal and written opinions of many experts in different fields such as agriculture and environment, as well as the declarations of many caring explorers and experts of archeology, it is totally clear that Sivand Dam will not only destroy so many archeological sites but would also endanger the agricultural and environmental wellbeing of the region.
While extending its congratulations for the anniversary of the Human Rights Day and enthusiastically wishing for peace and freedom for all the peoples of the world, the International Committee to Save the Archeological Sites of Pasargad Plains sincerely asks for the help of all relevant international organizations and all people who demand the preservation of historical and cultural backbones of nations' identities and deeply respect the cultural prestige of nations, to do whatever is humanely possible to prevent this cultural catastrophe from becoming realized.
With love and respect
